This month we highlight Keith Hurbs for being honored as a 2017 Hero in Medicine for the great work he’s carried out with MD Plus to promote preventative health and wellness. We couldn’t be prouder! Read below for more.

“It’s my life’s work, it’s my passion to help others–to pay it forward, and I am blessed to [have] the opportunity to serve the people of the Glades”. It’s that powerful sentiment that Keith Hurbs shared with a packed room of medical professionals at the Palm Beach Medical Society’s “Heroes in Medicine” award ceremony–where he was honoured for his contributions in the advancement of preventative health and wellness within the Glades community and has fuelled him to serve the people of the Glades each and every day since 2001.

It’s my life’s work, it’s my passion to help others–to pay it forward, and I am blessed to [have] the opportunity to serve the people of the Glades

Now for the million-dollar question…How does an accountant from Mount Vernon, NY end up working in family medicine, in a city for which he’s only spent a few months getting to know and subsequently fell in love with? It probably has a little to do with his natural tendency to help others and a lot to do with the fact that the Glades community reminded him so much of his childhood hometown– Kingston, Jamaica. A community with a vibrant mix of cultures, appreciation for the arts, athletic talent and rising scholars but also battles poverty and the many challenges that accompany socio-economic hardships, one being adequate access to healthcare.

In a leap of faith, allowing God to take the wheel and guide his next move, Keith used his knowledge gained in the financial sector to buy a fledgling practice and develop it into one of the largest rural health clinics in Palm Beach County over the course of 15 years, allowing him to deliver on his promise to care for the community, by providing affordable, quality healthcare to all patients who enter MD Plus’s doors.
